Easter Sunday Recipe

How can a delicious treat teach us about the love of God?

“The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” - Matthew 28:5-6

When I was growing up, my mom would always make “Resurrection Rolls” for Easter. She used this delicious breakfast treat as a way to tell us about why we celebrate Easter. Some of you might have never heard about these, but I can assure you it is worth the time in the kitchen….

You will need 5 ingredients:

- Marshmallows (the big ones)

- Butter (Melted)

- Sugar 

- Cinnamon 

(You will mix equal parts of the sugar & Cinnamon in a bowl for dipping)

- Crescent Rolls

I know what you’re thinking…. “Where is she going with this?” But I promise! This might be your new family tradition! 

My mother first would take the Crescent Roll dough and say, “this represents the cloth they wrapped Jesus’s body in after He died on the cross for our sins. 

She would then take the big, white, fluffy marshmallow and say, “ this represents Jesus, because He is pure & perfect; He was made without sin.” 

Then she dipped the marshmallow in the butter, which was to represent the oil they put on His body, and next rolled it in the sugar and cinnamon (mixed together these represent the spices they put on Jesus’s body for burial)

She then put the marshmallow on the crescent dough triangle and folded each corner over it. She would say, “ this is to represent the tomb they laid Jesus’s body in. They rolled a stone to cover the tomb, just like this dough covers the marshmallow.”

   

She stuck the rolls into the preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 8 to 10 minutes ( or as long as the crescent roll label directions say) and while we waited she read Matthew 28.

1“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” - Matthew 28: 1-10

When the timer went off, we pulled the rolls out of the oven. Peering through the holes of the crescent rolls, we could see the marshmallow was gone! “Jesus has risen! He has risen indeed!”

      

 Even though we knew why the marshmallows had disappeared from the crescent rolls, what a great visual reminder to depict Jesus rising from the dead! 

Do we even realize the kind of love God has for us? The kind of love that knew the world would need a Savior to come deliver us from sin and death. The kind of love that allowed His own son to die on a cross. The kind of love that died for the sins of those who don’t even know Him, those that say they don’t love Him back. He died for those that mocked Him, those that persecuted Him, those that nailed Him to that cross. Can you imagine a love like that? 

Father, thank you for dying for my sins. I can never repay you. Thank you for loving me, for continuing to love me even when I don’t deserve it, when I disobey, when I falter. Thank you for forgiving me, for providing a way to one day be with You and worship You in Heaven. Amen.
