Let Your Air-Dry Clay Take Its Time!

There are some parts of creating that simply can't be rushed.

Air-dry clay is one of them.

I know it's tempting to want to speed things along when you're excited to see your finished piece. But when it comes to clay, a little patience can make a big difference.

Air-dry clay needs time and airflow to dry evenly.

And the more evenly it dries, the better chance your finished piece has of staying flat and strong.

Start With Even Thickness

When you're creating your clay piece, try to keep the thickness as consistent as possible.

If one area is much thicker than another, those areas will dry at different rates.

The thicker section will take longer to dry, which can increase the chance of cracking or warping.

It doesn't have to be perfectly measured.

Just do your best to create a piece that's relatively even throughout.

Give It Room to Breathe

Once you've finished creating, place your piece on a flat, breathable surface and let it dry naturally.

If the shape of your piece allows, gently turn it over once the top has started to firm up. This allows both sides to get some airflow as it continues to dry.

And here's one thing you don't want to do:

Don't try to force it to dry faster with intense heat or strong sunlight.

It may seem like a shortcut, but drying too quickly can increase the chance of cracking or warping.

Instead, give it time.

There's Something Beautiful About Not Rushing

I think that's one of the things I love about working with clay.

It reminds us that some things simply need time.

You create the piece.

You shape it.

You add the details.

And then… you wait.

You let the air do its work.

You don't have to keep fussing with it. You don't have to rush the process.

Just give it the time it needs.

So if you're working with air-dry clay this month, remember:

Slow and steady is a good thing.

Give your clay the time and airflow it needs, and let the creative process unfold one step at a time. 🤍

Sometimes the best thing we can do for a beautiful creation is simply give it time to become what it's meant to be.
