Jehovah Shalom - The Lord is Peace

I can still remember sitting in Vacation Bible School as a child, hearing the story of Gideon for the very first time. Years later, I had the privilege of teaching that same story during VBS. Each time, I found myself relating deeply to Gideon’s insecurities and fears.
But this week, as I prepared for our Creative Hearts Scripture Journaling lesson, God gave me a fresh perspective. ✨ You can watch the full replay of this week’s lesson on YouTube here.
Through the New Believer’s Bible Commentary and Kay Arthur’s Lord, I Want to Know You, I saw Gideon’s story unfold in a way that I had never noticed before. Yes, Gideon was still the man filled with doubts and insecurities. Yes, he was afraid. But woven through his story was something even greater—God’s mercy, God’s patience, and Gideon’s obedience in spite of his fears.
In Judges 6:24, we see a powerful moment:
"So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace."
Here, we are introduced to Jehovah Shalom—The Lord is Peace.
And that truth is just as real for us today as it was for Gideon.
-
In the middle of fear—He is peace.
-
In the middle of insecurity—He is peace.
-
In the middle of uncertainty—He is peace.
What a beautiful reminder that our peace isn’t found in ourselves or our circumstances—it’s found in Him.
Scripture Journaling Prompt
This week, I want to invite you to go deeper:
-
Read the entire passage about the Call of Gideon (Judges 6:11–24).
-
Underline or highlight the parts that stand out to you most.
-
Take a few quiet moments to do a “heart dump.” Write down your fears, insecurities, and anything that feels too heavy to carry.
-
Offer those words up to the Lord as a sacrifice.
-
Then, with a bold marker, write Jehovah Shalom over those fears.
Rest in the truth that He is Peace.
Friend, if Gideon could walk in obedience even with shaky knees, so can we. Not because we’re strong, but because the Lord is our peace.
