He Sees You: Knowing God as El Roi

He Sees You: Knowing God as El Roi

“Where is the sovereign God who promises that all things work together for good? Does He know what is going on? Does He see?
Yes, He is El Roi, the God who sees. The omnipresent God is there, and His eyes are not shut. He isn't asleep, unaware of all the circumstances. He sees.”

Kay Arthur, “Lord, I Want to Know You”

Have you ever felt invisible?

Like your hurt was hidden or your efforts unnoticed? Maybe you've walked through seasons of deep discouragement, asking the very questions above - Does God see what I'm going through?

If you've ever wondered these things, you're not alone. In fact, there's a woman in the Bible who asked those same questions — and the answer she received reveals one of the most comforting names of God.

Her name was Hagar.

The Story Behind the Name El Roi

In Genesis 16, Hagar was a woman caught in a painful and complicated situation. She was mistreated, rejected, and ran away in desperation. But in the wilderness, when it felt like no one saw her — God did.

In a divine encounter, the Lord spoke to her tenderly, calling her by name. And in that moment, she gave God the name El Roi, which means “The God who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13)

He saw everything — not just the pain she experienced, but also the choices she made. He saw the full story. And still, He met her with mercy and direction.

Why El Roi Matters for Us Today

Knowing God as El Roi is more than a comforting name — it’s a powerful truth for our daily lives. It means:

  • He sees the tears no one else sees.
  • He notices the small acts of obedience you think go unrecognized.
  • He understands your story fully - both the hurts done to you and the choices you've made.
  • He meets you in the wilderness - not just when things look "put together."

This week, I encourage you to reflect on this name of God and what it means to you.

Journal Prompt: A Personal Reflection

In your journal, think and reflect on these two things:

1. In what ways can you relate to Hagar?

2. Why would it help you to know God as El Roi?

You are seen.
Not just by the people around you, but by the God who created you, who knows your heart, and who lovingly watches over every detail of your life.

He is El Roi.
He sees.
He cares.
And He’s right there with you — even now.
