Don’t Forget Your Inheritance

Don’t Forget Your Inheritance

"Peace I leave with you; my Peace I give to you, I do not give as the world gives" John 14:27

The Life Application Bible and the Believer’s Bible Commentary gave me a whole new perspective on this verse, and the Holy Spirit has refreshed my heart as I’ve been sitting with it.

From the Believer’s Bible Commentary:

“A person who is about to die usually writes a last will and testament in which he leaves his possessions to his loved ones. Here the Lord Jesus was doing that very thing. However, He did not bequeath material things but something that money could not buy—peace, inward peace of conscience that arises from a sense of pardoned sin and of reconciliation with God. Christ can give it because He purchased it with His own blood at Calvary. It is not given as the world gives—sparingly, selfishly, and for a short time. His gift of peace is forever. Why then should a Christian be troubled or afraid?”

What a powerful picture of inheritance. But here's my honest answer to that question:

I become troubled and afraid because I am so forgetful.

I forget the gift that I inherited. I lose sight of eternity and start focusing on the temporary. I forget my inheritance.

That’s why Scripture journaling and lettering are so powerful for me. Writing verses over and over helps me believe and remember them. Keeping them on my desk, tucked in my journal, or placed where I see them daily helps me walk them out—baby step by baby step.

The Amplified Bible makes Jesus’ words in John 14:27 even more clear:

“Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]”

Oh boy—this verse speaks right to my heart! I cannot control what happens to me or around me, but I can control how I respond.

What am I permitting to happen in my thought life?

This is where Scripture journaling becomes such a powerful tool. Take a few quiet moments to do a “heart dump” on paper. Write down the fears, worries, or intimidation that you’ve been allowing to take up residence in your heart. Then—make space for your inheritance. Replace those words with Jesus’ promise: Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you.

Sweet Friend, don’t forget your inheritance. His peace is already yours.
