Lettering Supplies for Beginners
One of the questions I hear most often from new members is:
"What supplies do I need to start lettering?"
The good news is that you probably already own something that will work.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when starting a new creative hobby is believing they need all the "right" supplies before they can begin. The truth is that lettering is much more about practice than it is about having expensive tools.
Start with What You Have
If you have:
-
A pencil
-
A pen
-
A marker
-
A highlighter
...you can begin lettering today.
In fact, some of my favorite early lettering practice sessions were done with simple supplies I already had around the house.
My Favorite Beginner-Friendly Lettering Supplies
Pilot Frixion Erasable Pens
These are wonderful for beginners because they erase cleanly. If you're nervous about making mistakes, these can help build confidence while you're learning letter shapes and spacing.
I especially love the variety of colors available, making them perfect for Scripture journaling and color-coding verses.
Paper Mate Mechanical Pencil
A good mechanical pencil is one of the most valuable lettering tools you can own. It allows you to lightly sketch your lettering before committing to ink and helps with spacing and layout.
Tombow TwinTone Markers
These markers offer two tips in one pen—a fine tip and a broader tip—giving you flexibility for journaling, headers, and decorative elements.
Pentel Sign Pens
These are some of my favorite tools for creating thicker downstrokes while still being easy to control. Their shorter tip makes them less intimidating than larger brush pens.
Zebra Midliners
Midliners are excellent because they combine highlighting and lettering. The dual-tip design allows you to create both thick and thin marks while adding beautiful color to your journal pages.
Le Pen Markers
Le Pens are perfect when you want delicate details, fine lettering, or decorative accents. They come in beautiful colors and are easy to use.
Zebra ClickArt Markers
One of the best features of these markers is their click-top design. No lids to lose! They're colorful, convenient, and wonderful for journaling.
Sakura Gelly Roll Soufflé Pens
These specialty gel pens create a raised, dimensional effect that adds beautiful accents and highlights to journal pages and mixed media projects.

Don't Let Supplies Become a Roadblock
Here's the most important thing I want you to remember:
Don't let supplies keep you from spending time in God's Word.
You do not need the perfect pen.
You do not need the newest marker.
You do not need a large collection of supplies.
Use what you have.
Practice with what you have.
Create with what you have.
As you continue lettering and journaling, you'll naturally discover which tools you enjoy most and can slowly add to your collection over time.
The Real Goal
The goal isn't perfect lettering.
The goal isn't a perfect journal page.
The goal is spending time with Jesus.
Lettering and Scripture journaling simply give us another way to slow down, focus on His Word, and allow His truth to settle deeply into our hearts.
So grab a pen, open your journal, and let's create together.
