Abide in the Vine

Abide in the Vine

There are some months that feel especially meaningful, and this July is one of those months.

As I was preparing everything for this month's Creative Hearts Studio and Creative ART Printables, I couldn't help but reflect on how beautifully God has woven every detail together. The Name of Jesus, the color of the month, the artwork, and even the inspiration behind our projects all point to one powerful truth:

"I am the vine; you are the branches." — John 15:5

What a comforting reminder.

Branches don't strive to produce fruit on their own. They simply remain connected to the vine. Everything they need flows from that relationship.

Isn't that true for us, too?

Sometimes we spend so much energy trying harder, doing more, and carrying heavier burdens that we forget where our strength comes from. Jesus doesn't ask us to manufacture fruit. He simply invites us to abide.

That invitation is at the heart of everything we're creating together this month.

Creativity Changed My Relationship with Scripture

Many years ago, I believed something that simply wasn't true.

I told myself, "I just can't memorize Scripture."

Then one day, while painting fruit on flower pots, signs, walls, and just about anything else I could find, I began hand-lettering Galatians 5:22–23 over and over again.

Without even realizing it, something beautiful was happening.

As my hands repeated God's Word, He was writing it on my heart.

The verses became part of me—not because I sat down determined to memorize them, but because creativity gave me a way to slow down, pay attention, and spend time with His Word.

Not long after that, I painted grapevines alongside the words from John 15:

"I am the vine; you are the branches."

Once again, those verses settled deeply into my heart.

Those two designs became life-changing for me, and this month I'm excited to share refreshed versions of them with you inside our Creative ART Printables library.

Green Everywhere

Our Color of the Month is Vineyard Greenery, and I honestly can't think of a better color for July.

Green reminds us of life.

Growth.

Fresh beginnings.

Walk outside and you'll see it everywhere—in the trees, the grass, the gardens, and the vines.

There isn't just one green. There are countless shades, each one unique and beautiful.

As we'll discover together this month, mixing greens with watercolor opens up a whole new world of possibilities. We'll explore soft greens, deep greens, vibrant greens, and muted greens while creating artwork that reminds us to stay connected to the true Vine.

A Lesson from Scotland

Earlier this year, my family and I traveled to Scotland and England, and I came home overflowing with inspiration.

One memory in particular has stayed with me.

As we traveled through the Scottish Highlands, I noticed small stone buildings scattered throughout the landscape. Our guide explained they were called bothies—simple shelters originally built for shepherds and fishermen to escape harsh weather.

When he described them as places of refuge, something stirred in my heart.

Those little buildings looked abandoned.

Quiet.

Almost forgotten.

Yet they were built for protection.

Immediately I thought about the Lord.

How often has He become my place of refuge?

How many times has He gently reminded me that no matter what storms come, there is always a place to rest in Him?

That moment became the inspiration for this month's painting.

It isn't simply a little cottage.

It's a reminder that God is our refuge.

Beauty Inspires Worship

While visiting England, I also spent time in the Victoria and Albert Museum, where I found myself captivated by historic wallpaper designs inspired by nature.

The flowing vines, leaves, and organic patterns reminded me that beauty has always pointed us back to our Creator.

Combined with the inspiration from Scotland, those designs became the foundation for this month's artwork.

Every leaf...

Every vine...

Every shade of green...

All whisper the same invitation:

Abide.

Create with What You Already Have

One of my favorite parts of each month's journey is encouraging you to "shop your stash."

Before buying something new, look around your home.

Gather your greens.

Pull out those watercolor paints.

Find scraps of ribbon, fabric, paper, markers, pencils, or even leaves from your yard.

God has given us such beautiful resources to work with.

Sometimes creativity isn't about having more.

Sometimes it's simply seeing what you already have with fresh eyes.

More Than Art

People often ask why I teach art this way.

The answer is simple.

I'm not just teaching painting techniques.

I'm not just teaching lettering.

I'm inviting women to experience creativity as a way of drawing closer to God.

Art becomes prayer.

Lettering becomes meditation.

Painting becomes worship.

Scripture becomes written on our hearts.

That's the gift I hope every woman discovers.

Because creativity changed my life.

It helped renew my mind.

It refreshed my heart.

It deepened my relationship with God's Word.

And my prayer is that it will do the same for you.
