Anxious in Nothing, Prayerful in Everything

Anxious in Nothing, Prayerful in Everything

This week in our lettering practice, we focused on Philippians 4:7—but it’s hard to read verse 7 without first reading verse 6. And honestly, the entire chapter of Philippians 4 is worth sitting with and soaking in.

Here’s how the Amplified Bible puts these verses:

“Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God’s peace (shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace) which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
—Philippians 4:6–7

When I read the Believer’s Bible Commentary on this passage, I found myself in tears at this question:

“Is it really possible for a Christian to be anxious for nothing?”

It feels impossible some days, doesn’t it? But then I came across this reminder:

It is possible, as long as we have the resource of believing prayer.

Here are a few truths I jotted down in my own Scripture journal to help me remember—and apply:

  • Prayer is both an act and an atmosphere.

  • We come to the Lord with specific requests at specific times.

  • But prayer is also meant to be the attitude of our life—a constant openness and conversation with Him.

  • Anxious in nothing. Prayerful in everything. Thankful for anything.

That last phrase has been sitting heavy in my heart this week. If I can live in prayerfulness, then I don’t have to live in anxiety.

Scripture Journaling Prompt

  • Read Philippians 4:6–7 slowly in your favorite translation (and bonus points if you spend time in the whole chapter).

  • In your journal, write down your biggest worries or anxieties right now.

  • Then, beside each one, write a prayer of thanksgiving and trust—offering it back to the Lord.

  • Finally, choose one word from these verses (peace, thanksgiving, prayer, or guard) and letter it creatively on your page.

God’s Word is not just for head knowledge—it’s for heart transformation. If you ask Him to show you how to apply His Word, He will. ❤️
